Dreaming of swaying palms, turquoise waters, and endless sunshine — but worried about hurricane season? I understand completely. The official hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June 1 to November 30, and I’m not about to spend my hard-earned travel coins only to be stuck inside dodging storms. The good news is that some destinations are outside the hurricane belt or are rarely impacted, so you can enjoy all the tropical beauty without constant weather worries.
Today, I’m sharing some of the safest Caribbean islands during hurricane season — Trinidad & Tobago, the ABC Islands (Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire), and Grenada.
These destinations are perfect for my 40+ sisters, especially those of us over 50, who want to travel smart, stay stylish, and keep safety at the forefront.
Trinidad & Tobago: Where Hurricanes Take a Raincheck
Trinidad and Tobago are situated so far south in the Caribbean that hurricanes almost always pass them by, making them one of the best Caribbean destinations during hurricane season. Getting there is easy — you can fly into Piarco International Airport (POS) in Trinidad, and if you want to experience the charm of Tobago, you can take a short domestic flight or ferry ride.
In Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain, you’ll find everything from upscale hotels to cozy bed-and-breakfasts. Over in Tobago, the vibe is more laid-back, with serene beachfront villas and eco-lodges that put you right on the sand. Whether you’re dancing to calypso and soca during Carnival, enjoying a plate of Bake and Shark at Maracas Bay, or exploring the lush Asa Wright Nature Centre and the magical Nylon Pool, you’ll find plenty to do in both islands.
When visiting, I always recommend using reputable transportation services, avoiding walking alone in isolated areas after dark, and keeping a photocopy of your passport and travel documents separate from the originals.
ABC Islands: Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire — Hurricane-Free Havens
The ABC Islands — Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire — are located well outside the hurricane belt, making them some of the safest Caribbean islands to visit in hurricane season. Sunshine is practically guaranteed here, along with gorgeous beaches, vibrant culture, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
Aruba is famous for its dazzling white-sand beaches like Palm and Eagle Beach, and it’s easy to reach via Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA). Curacao, with its pastel-colored architecture in Willemstad and hidden coves, is accessible through Hato International Airport (CUR). Bonaire, a diver’s paradise with some of the most pristine reefs in the Caribbean, is reached through Flamingo International Airport (BON).
Each island offers its own style of accommodations. Aruba is home to luxury resorts, Curacao blends colorful city stays with beach retreats, and Bonaire offers everything from dive-focused lodges to tranquil guesthouses by the reef. You can lounge on Eagle Beach, explore the winding streets of Willemstad, or dive into Bonaire’s protected coral gardens.
Even in destinations as safe as these, I suggest limiting the amount of cash you carry, staying in well-lit areas after dark, and being aware of your surroundings at all times.
Grenada: The Spice Isle
Known as the “Spice Isle” thanks to its abundance of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, Grenada sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt and is rarely affected by storms. This island has a warm, welcoming vibe that makes it one of my favorite places to recommend during hurricane season.
You’ll fly into Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) and can choose from boutique hotels along Grand Anse Beach, which puts you close to shops and restaurants, or eco-lodges tucked into the hills for a more peaceful retreat.
Grenada offers experiences for every traveler — from touring a nutmeg plantation and wandering through the spice markets to relaxing on Grand Anse Beach or snorkeling at the Underwater Sculpture Park. For me, part of Grenada’s magic is that it feels both vibrant and unhurried.
I always remind travelers to avoid leaving valuables in rental cars and to share their itinerary with someone back home. Personally, I check in daily with my family group chat — it’s both a safety measure and a way to stay connected while traveling solo.
Bonus Hurricane Season Travel Tips

Even when visiting hurricane-safe Caribbean islands, planning ahead is key. I never travel without my essentials and solid travel insurance with Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage — they’re the foundation of stress-free travel. CFAR coverage gives you the flexibility to change your plans for almost any reason, while the rest of your travel insurance protects your trip investment and gives you peace of mind in case of unexpected weather, delays, or cancellations.
I personally recommend using Squaremouth — a trusted comparison site that lets you easily review policies from multiple providers so you can find the best coverage for your needs. My carefully chosen essentials keep me safe, comfortable, and ready for anything from a beach day to an unplanned adventure. Over the years, I’ve refined this list to include practical safety gear, comfort items, and small conveniences that make a big difference when you’re far from home.
