Solo Travel in November: The Best International Destinations for Women Over 50 (and What to Wear)

November is one of my favorite times of the year to travel. The crowds are smaller, the prices are better, the weather in many parts of the world is calmer and more comfortable, and the overall energy feels slower, softer, and more intentional. If you’re a woman over 50 — especially a Black woman over 50 — November is the perfect time to explore internationally without the holiday chaos or peak-season overwhelm.

Below are some of the best places around the world to visit in November, why they work so well for this time of year, and what you should pack to feel stylish, comfortable, and confident on every adventure.

🇵🇹 Portugal

ree

Portugal is one of the most delightful destinations to explore in November. The weather stays mild — usually between the upper 50s and mid-60s — and cities like Lisbon and Porto have a calm, golden glow that’s perfect for slow wandering. With fewer tourists, you can enjoy panoramic viewpoints, waterfront walks, historic neighborhoods, and cozy cafés without rushing or squeezing through crowds. It’s a beautiful time of year for women over 50 to immerse themselves in culture, food, and architecture while enjoying relaxed, comfortable travel days.

What to Wear in Portugal in November

  • Lightweight sweaters or knits

  • A blazer, denim jacket, or light fall coat

  • Long-sleeve tees for layering

  • Straight-leg jeans or slim trousers

  • Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones

  • A lightweight scarf

  • A midi or knit dress for dinner

🇲🇽 Mexico (San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, Oaxaca)

ree

Mexico in November is warm, colorful, and perfect for exploration. The rainy season has ended, leaving behind bright blue skies and comfortable daytime temperatures in the low to mid-70s. Cities like San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, and Oaxaca are vibrant and full of culture — and the atmosphere after Día de los Muertos still feels festive, lively, and full of flavor. November gives you warm days for markets and museums, and cool evenings perfect for rooftop dinners and sunset strolls.

What to Wear in Mexico in November

  • Cotton or linen tops

  • Lightweight cardigan, kimono, or denim jacket

  • Comfortable sandals or sneakers

  • Midi or maxi dresses in bold colors

  • Lightweight jeans or cropped pants

  • Wide-brim hat

  • Statement earrings

🇪🇬 Egypt (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan)

ree

November is the best month of the year to visit Egypt. The scorching summer heat finally breaks, leaving warm, dry days in the upper-70s to mid-80s — perfect for visiting pyramids, temples, historic sites, and markets without feeling drained. Cairo is energetic but bearable, Luxor and Aswan feel magical in the cooler mornings, and Nile cruises become far more enjoyable. If you’ve been dreaming of visiting Egypt but fear extreme heat, November is your golden window.

What to Wear in Egypt in November

  • Lightweight cotton or linen tops

  • Loose-fitting long pants or flowy skirts

  • Maxi dresses with modest necklines

  • Wide-brim hat

  • Sunglasses and a breathable scarf

  • Comfortable walking shoes (avoid white)

  • Light jacket or wrap for evenings

🇮🇪 Ireland (Dublin, Galway, Cork Only)

ree

Ireland in November is cool, misty, and full of cozy charm — the kind of place that feels like a warm hug wrapped in a wool sweater. Cities like Dublin, Galway, and Cork come alive in a quieter, more intimate way during this time of year. Temperatures usually range from the mid-40s to low-50s, with a mix of cloudy skies, crisp air, and light rain. But that’s exactly what makes Ireland so magical in November — the moody landscapes, the cozy pubs, the soulful live music, and the slower pace that invites you to settle in and savor the moment. Without the heavy tourist rush, you can wander through historic streets, enjoy museums and cafés at your own rhythm, and experience the warmth of Irish hospitality in a much more personal way. Just be prepared, because one thing is guaranteed: you will need an umbrella — but with the right layers, Ireland in November is unforgettable.

What to Wear in Ireland in November

  • Waterproof trench coat or rain jacket

  • Compact umbrella (this is non-negotiable)

  • Warm sweaters (merino, wool, or knit blends)

  • Long-sleeve layering tops

  • Waterproof boots or sturdy walking shoes

  • Jeans or warm trousers

🇮🇹 Italy (Florence, Bologna, Sicily)

ree

Italy in November is warm, soulful, and infinitely more enjoyable when you focus on the places that truly shine this time of year — Florence, Bologna, and Sicily. These destinations offer all the beauty, culture, food, and history you want from Italy without the chaos, crowds, or tourist traps that can make other cities unbearable.

Florence feels intimate and golden in November, with cooler temperatures perfect for wandering through piazzas, browsing local artisan shops, and enjoying art without standing in hour-long lines. Bologna becomes a true food lover’s paradise as truffle season peaks and the markets overflow with seasonal flavors. And Sicily remains pleasantly mild, offering gorgeous coastal views, ancient history, and rich cultural traditions without the heat and tourist congestion of summer.

For women over 50, Italy in November is slower, calmer, easier, and infinitely more enjoyable — especially when you stick to these three destinations.

What to Wear in Italy in November

  • Tailored blazer or light wool coat

  • Sweaters layered over tees or blouses

  • Straight-leg jeans or trousers

  • Flat or low-heel boots (ideal for walking)

  • Midi dresses paired with boots for dinner

  • Stylish scarves (a must in Italy)

🇿🇦 Cape Town, South Africa

Temperatures generally fall in the 70s, and the coastal breeze keeps things fresh and pleasant. Beaches, vineyards, mountains, and markets are all in their prime. For women 50+, Cape Town offers the perfect blend of nature, food, culture, and relaxation — without peak-season crowds.

Zanzibar in November is warm, tropical, and stunning — with a note: it’s the short rains season. But the showers are typically brief and refreshing, followed by sunshine and blue skies. Temperatures usually sit in the mid-80s, the island is green and lush, and prices are lower than peak season. It’s an excellent month for women over 50 to enjoy a mix of cultural immersion in Stone Town and luxurious relaxation at beautiful beach resorts.
