My Four Days in Mauritius: A Tropical Adventure
Nestled in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a paradisiacal gem that captivates with its lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and pristine beaches. I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit this beautiful island, following a fantastic Meet Up in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Join me as I recount my journey to Mauritius and explore the best ways to get around this enchanting destination.
Getting to Mauritius
My journey to Mauritius was quite an adventure, weaving through the fascinating tapestry of Africa. After a memorable stay in Zanzibar, Tanzania, I flew to Johannesburg, South Africa, which served as a gateway to Mauritius. From Johannesburg, a direct flight whisked me to the island, landing at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU).
For travelers starting from the USA, the route typically involves a few connections due to the distance and the need to traverse different continents. The most common itineraries involve flying through major hubs such as Dubai, Paris, or Johannesburg. For instance, you might fly from New York to Dubai with Emirates or from Los Angeles to Paris with Air France, and then onward to Mauritius. Each of these connections offers its own charm and convenience, adding to the excitement of the journey.
Despite the long haul, the anticipation of Mauritius’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture makes every moment worth it. And trust me, stepping off the plane and feeling the warm tropical breeze is an exhilarating experience that erases any lingering travel fatigue.
Getting Around Mauritius
Once you’ve arrived in Mauritius, the next step is to explore the island and its myriad attractions. Getting around Mauritius is relatively straightforward, with several options available to suit different preferences and budgets.
Taxis: Your Primary Mode of Transport
Taxis are the most common and convenient way to navigate the island. They are readily available at the airport, hotels, and popular tourist spots. Unlike many other destinations, Mauritius does not have a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. Instead, you can rely on traditional taxis or book a ride through hotel services.
Mauritian taxis operate without meters, so it’s essential to agree on the fare before starting your journey. The fares are usually reasonable, and most drivers are friendly and knowledgeable about the island’s attractions. Whether you want to visit the bustling markets of Port Louis, the serene beaches of Flic en Flac, or the lush greenery of Black River Gorges National Park, taxis offer a flexible and comfortable way to explore.
Rental Cars: Freedom to Roam
For those who prefer the freedom to explore at their own pace, renting a car is an excellent option. Mauritius drives on the left side of the road, and the island’s well-maintained roads make driving a pleasant experience. Numerous rental agencies are available at the airport and in major towns, offering a variety of vehicles to suit your needs.
With a rental car, you can venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems, such as the secluded coves along the coastal roads or the quaint villages nestled in the mountains. It’s the perfect way to soak in the island’s diverse landscapes and enjoy spontaneous detours.
Public Transportation: Affordable and Adventurous
For budget-conscious travelers, Mauritius also offers a network of buses that connect major towns and tourist areas. The buses are an affordable way to get around, providing a more local and adventurous experience. While the schedules can be a bit unpredictable, the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of the bus rides adds a unique flavor to your journey.
Biking and Walking: Embrace the Slow Pace
In certain areas, particularly along the coast, biking and walking are delightful ways to explore. Many resorts and hotels offer bike rentals, allowing you to enjoy the scenic beauty at a leisurely pace. Strolling along the beach or cycling through charming villages lets you immerse yourself in the island’s relaxed vibe and connect with the local culture.
Where I stayed – Salt of Palmar Hotel
My voyage commenced with a stay at the prestigious Salt of Palomar Hotel, nestled along the picturesque northern coast of Mauritius. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, this sanctuary offered the perfect blend of relaxation and opulence. From lounging by the azure pool to unwinding on the pristine beaches, every moment at this enchanting retreat was a testament to Mauritius’ splendor. You too can experience this luxurious haven by booking your stay through Booking.com.

Charming Catamaran Excursion
One of the highlights of my journey was a captivating catamaran excursion, providing me with an opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring waterfalls that adorn Mauritius’ landscape. The sheer magnificence of these natural wonders left an indelible impression on my soul, a memory I shall forever cherish. Despite the slight overcrowding aboard the catamaran, the friendly crew and the mesmerizing vistas made it a truly unforgettable experience.
Exploring Port Louis and Iconic Landmarks
Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, I embarked on an exploration of Port Louis, the vibrant capital city of Mauritius. Our journey led us to discover iconic landmarks, each steeped in rich history and cultural significance.
Kuan Fu Tea Factory
Stepping into the Kuan Fu Tea Factory was like entering a portal to Mauritius’ rich heritage in the tea trade. Amidst the air perfumed with the aroma of freshly brewed tea, I was immersed in a world where history and culture intertwine seamlessly.
As I wandered through the factory, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the intriguing anecdotes shared by our knowledgeable guide. Did you know that the now-extinct Dodo bird, symbolic of Mauritius’ unique biodiversity, once served as the island’s national bird and also graces the factory as its cherished mascot? This fascinating nugget of information added another layer of depth to my understanding of Mauritius’ cultural tapestry.
In addition to the historical insights, the visit to Kuan Fu Tea Factory also provided a sensory delight. From the delicate fragrance of the teas to the meticulous craftsmanship evident in every step of the tea-making process, it was a truly immersive experience that left a lasting impression on me.
Indeed, the Kuan Fu Tea Factory stands as a testament to Mauritius’ enduring legacy in the tea industry, offering visitors a glimpse into the island’s past while celebrating its vibrant present.
Red Roofed Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel
As I leisurely strolled along the picturesque waterfront, my eyes were drawn to the majestic sight of the Red Roofed Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel. Its vibrant crimson roof stood out against the azure sky, casting a striking silhouette against the backdrop of Port Louis’ bustling harbor.
The chapel’s presence was more than just architectural; it was a testament to the rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance of the city. Its intricate façade spoke volumes about the craftsmanship and dedication of those who had built it, a symbol of reverence and devotion that has endured through the ages.
Captivated by its beauty, I couldn’t help but pause to soak in the atmosphere, feeling a sense of awe and wonder at the historical significance of this sacred site. Indeed, the Red Roofed Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel is not just a building; it’s a living monument to the enduring spirit of Port Louis and its people.
Shopping at the Port Louis Waterfront
Venturing into the bustling Port Louis Waterfront for a shopping excursion was an absolute delight. Surrounded by an array of charming stores and inviting eateries, the ambiance was electric with the promise of discovering hidden treasures.
Amidst the hustle and bustle, I found myself drawn to a variety of boutiques, each offering a unique selection of goods. From trendy fashion outlets to quaint souvenir shops, there was something to pique everyone’s interest. It was here that I stumbled upon a stunning statement ring, its intricate design catching the light just so, at a price that didn’t break the bank.
However, amidst the excitement of shopping, I encountered a word of caution. While most establishments maintained a friendly and accommodating atmosphere, some gift shops exhibited a more aggressive sales approach. It’s advisable to exercise caution and diligence when finalizing purchases, ensuring a thorough review of your bill before parting with your hard-earned cash, especially when it comes to credit card transactions. Vigilance ensures that your shopping experience remains as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible, leaving you to savor the memories of your discoveries at the Port Louis Waterfront.
Charming Beach Town of Gran Baie
Nestled along the coastline of Mauritius, Gran Baie beckons with its undeniable charm and undeniable allure. As I ventured into this quaint beach town, I found myself instantly captivated by its pristine shores and infectious ambiance.
The tranquil rhythm of life in Gran Baie seemed to dance to the gentle lull of the waves, inviting me to unwind and surrender to the serenity of its surroundings. Whether I chose to bask under the warm embrace of the sun or dive into the crystal-clear waters for a snorkeling adventure, every moment spent in this idyllic paradise was pure bliss.
The allure of Gran Baie lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the vibrant energy that permeates its streets. From colorful beachside cafes to bustling markets brimming with local crafts, there was always something new to discover around every corner.
Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, there remained an undeniable sense of tranquility that enveloped the town like a comforting embrace. It was here, amidst the harmonious blend of nature and culture, that I found myself truly at peace, cherishing each moment as if it were a precious gift.
In Gran Baie, time seemed to stand still, allowing me to savor the simple joys of life and forge memories that would last a lifetime. As I bid farewell to this enchanting beach town, I carried with me not only souvenirs of my adventures but also a newfound appreciation for the beauty of Mauritius and the warmth of its people. Gran Baie had captured my heart, leaving an indelible mark on my soul that would forever draw me back to its shores.
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden
Immersing myself in the lush splendor of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden was an essential highlight of my journey through Mauritius. Nestled within this verdant oasis lies a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a captivating tapestry of botanical wonders that stirred my soul and ignited my senses.
As I wandered through the meandering pathways of the garden, I found myself surrounded by an enchanting array of flora and fauna, each more mesmerizing than the last. Towering palms swayed gently in the breeze, while vibrant blooms painted the landscape in a riot of colors. The symphony of bird songs provided the perfect soundtrack to my leisurely stroll, adding to the sense of tranquility that enveloped the garden like a comforting embrace.
But it wasn’t just the natural beauty of the garden that captivated me; it was also the meticulous attention to detail and the rich history that permeated every corner. Named in honor of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, the garden stands as a testament to his legacy and his commitment to preserving the island’s natural heritage.
From the majestic giant water lilies of the Pamplemousses Pond to the exotic orchids of the tropical greenhouse, every corner of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden beckoned with the promise of discovery and wonder. It was a place where time seemed to stand still, allowing me to lose myself in the beauty of nature and forget the cares of the world.
No visit to Mauritius would be complete without experiencing the serenity and splendor of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden. It’s a place where the beauty of the natural world unfolds before your eyes, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
