My Favorite Solo Travel Budget Hacks Right Now

Hey there, fellow travelers! If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for ways to make your solo adventures not only more budget-friendly but also more comfortable. In this blog post, I’m excited to share with you my two favorite solo travel budget hacks that are currently saving me both money and legroom. Be sure to follow me on my YouTube channel, where I’ve shared two video shorts highlighting these hacks.

Budget Hack #1: Exit Row Seats Over Economy Premium Upgrades

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of stretching my legs during long flights. Instead of shelling out extra cash for economy premium upgrades, I’ve discovered a savvy way to secure extra legroom without breaking the bank.

Here’s how it works:

1. **Find the Lowest Priced Ticket:** Start by searching for the most budget-friendly ticket available, possibly using loyalty points if you’ve got them.

2. **Upgrade to Exit Row:** After booking your ticket, opt to pay for an upgrade to an exit row seat. Most airlines charge a reasonable fee for this upgrade and on several non-USA airlines you can select the exit row for FREE (yup!). Even if you pay for the upgrade on most airlines it is cheaper especially compared to premium cabin fares.

The magic of this hack? In the exit row, you’re required to stow both your personal handbag and carry-on luggage in the overhead bins during takeoff and landing. This means you’ll have ample legroom without the need for an economy premium or business class upgrade. Personally, I tuck my passport and cash into a small waist belt under my jacket, making it easily accessible during the flight and I leave everything else in the overhead bin.

So, next time you’re booking a flight, consider this wallet-friendly hack for a more comfortable journey. Check out my YouTube Short about this Hack below.

Budget Hack #2: Hotel Loyalty Points for Free Room Upgrades

For many solo travelers, finding affordable yet comfortable accommodation is a top priority. That’s where my second budget hack comes in, utilizing hotel loyalty points to score free or heavily discounted room upgrades.

Here’s my strategy:

1. **Choose a Hotel Chain and collect loyalty points for room upgrades and other perks:** I’ve always favored Hilton Hotels due to their widespread presence, and I’ve been stacking Hilton Honors points for years.

2. **Earn Elite Status:** Through consistent stays and with a boost from being an Amex Hilton Aspire Cardholder, I’ve achieved Hilton Honors Diamond status.

The perks of Diamond status include:

– **Free Room Upgrades:** When I book the lowest-priced room, I typically receive an upgrade upon check-in.

– **Complimentary Breakfast:** Enjoy a complimentary breakfast at participating Hilton properties.

– **Access to Executive Lounges:** Access to executive lounges when available, which is great for relaxation and refreshments.

Recently, during my stay at the Hilton Reforma in Mexico City, my Diamond status truly paid off, enhancing my travel experience.
