Journey Through Ancient Wonders: Exploring Egypt on a 10-Day Adventure

Egypt, the land of pharaohs, pyramids, and rich historical marvels, beckoned me for an unforgettable 10-day expedition in October. I embarked on a remarkable journey through this mesmerizing country, immersing myself in its ancient culture, encountering breathtaking monuments, and navigating the diverse landscapes that define Egypt’s allure.

Embarking on a 10-day adventure through Egypt from October 13th to the 23rd, with the core days being October 14th to the 22nd, I opted for the safety and security of GoAhead EF Tours rather than solo travel. As a Black woman, navigating Egypt alone isn’t always safe psychologically or physically, so joining a group seemed prudent. However, being the sole Black individual among a group of 20 travelers brought a complex set of experiences that I discuss candidly on my YouTube Live. While the journey overall was enjoyable and enriched by Egypt’s wonders, the absence of diversity within the tour group raised discomforting insights, prompting me to reconsider future tours with GoAhead EF despite the overall positive experience. Exploring Egypt’s marvels was awe-inspiring, yet my reflections highlight the importance of inclusive travel experiences and the need for a more diverse representation within group tours.

What to Pack and What to Wear to Egypt in October?

October in Egypt offers favorable weather for exploration, with temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to low 90s and a dry climate conducive to sightseeing. To ensure a respectful and comfortable experience, adhere to local customs by opting for modest attire like maxi skirts, linen pants, short-sleeve cotton shirts, and culturally appropriate maxi dresses or jumpsuits, while embracing tradition with a traditional Gallabia. Avoiding shorts or miniskirts helps minimize unwanted attention.

Additionally, essential travel accessories such as a portable neck fan for the heat, hand sanitizing wipes, travel-sized toiletries for hygiene, and a hydrating hand sanitizer are invaluable companions for a smooth journey. By respecting the culture and packing appropriately, travelers can relish an enriching and memorable adventure in Egypt.

Getting To Egypt

The best route to Egypt from the United States of America is through London or the Middle East. I flew from the Washington, DC area and then from DC nonstop to Jeddah Saudi Arabia and from there to Cairo.  I flew Saudia Airways. Overall the flight experience was positive but note: They do NOT serve alcohol on their flights!

Safety and Security in Egypt

Traveling solo as a Black woman over 40 to Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan can be an enriching and rewarding experience, but it’s important to prioritize safety. Here are some key considerations:

1. Research and Planning:

   – Research your destinations thoroughly, including their cultures, customs, and local laws.

   – Create a detailed itinerary, including transportation, accommodations, and activities.

2. Dress Code:

   – Respect local customs by dressing modestly, especially in conservative areas.

   – Consider packing lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

3. Cultural Sensitivity:

   – Be culturally sensitive and respectful of local customs and traditions.

   – Learn some basic Arabic phrases to facilitate communication and build rapport with locals.

4. Safety Precautions:

   – Stay informed about the local safety situation and any travel advisories.

   – Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas and use reputable transportation options.

5. Accommodations:

   – Choose well-reviewed, reputable accommodations, and consider hotels with good security measures.

   – Inform the hotel staff about your daily plans, so they are aware of your whereabouts.

6. Local Transportation:

   – Use registered taxis or rideshare services, and negotiate fares in advance.

   – If possible, have your accommodations arrange transportation from airports or train stations.

7. Travel Insurance:

   – Obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.

8. Money and Valuables:

   – Carry a money belt or concealed pouch for important documents, cash, and valuables.

   – Keep a copy of your passport, ID, and travel insurance in a separate location.

9. Health Precautions:

   – Check if vaccinations or health precautions are necessary before traveling.

   – Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and protect yourself from the sun’s strong rays.

10. Local Advice:

   – Seek advice from other travelers or expats and engage with locals to gain insights into the safest areas and practices.

11. Emergency Contacts:

   – Keep a list of emergency contacts, including the local embassy or consulate, with you at all times.

12. Stay Connected:

   – Carry a working mobile phone with a local SIM card and have a reliable method of communication.

13. Solo Travel Communities:

   – Connect with local and online solo travel communities for advice and support.

Remember that while these precautions are important, it’s also essential to remain open-minded and embrace the local culture and people. Solo travel can be a deeply fulfilling and educational experience, and with the right preparation, you can explore Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan safely and enjoyably.
