I recently had the opportunity to visit the beautiful cities of Cartagena and Medellin in Colombia. Before sharing my experiences, I want to emphasize the importance of checking migration requirements before arriving and departing from Colombia. It’s crucial to stay informed about any visa or entry requirements to ensure a smooth journey.
Getting There
I first arrived in the country via the Cartagena international airport. Ahead of arrival in the country you are required to complete an online entry form and present it to immigration officials at arrival and departure. Upon arriving at the airport in Cartagena, I must admit that the immigration process can be quite lengthy. To avoid unnecessary waiting in the heat and humidity of after exiting immigration, I highly recommend pre-arranging transportation from the airport to your accommodations. Websites like Booking.com can be useful for booking a private transfer. The distance from the airport to the walled city and the neighborhood of Getsemani area is approximately 15 minutes, making it a convenient choice.
One thing I must warn you about is the oppressive heat in Cartagena, especially during June. The high temperatures can impact your ability to fully enjoy your trip. To stay cool, I suggest wearing lightweight and breathable clothing, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and taking breaks in air-conditioned spaces or shade whenever possible. Additionally, consider carrying a small portable fan to help combat the heat. If heat and humidity are not your thing, avoid Cartagena during summer and fall and instead opt for visiting in the winter months when the weather is a bit milder and less humid.
Where to Stay in Cartegena
Choosing to stay in Getsemani over the Walled City can be a more affordable option without compromising on the experience. A great accommodation option in Getsemani is Hotel Casa Lola Deluxe, which offers comfortable rooms and a charming atmosphere. For food enthusiasts, I recommend visiting the hotel restaurant Dona Lola, known for its Afro-Latin cuisine that tantalizes the taste buds with unique flavors. Book you reservation at Hotel Casa Lola Deluxe using Booking.com
The weather was oppressively hot and humid in Cartagena in June 2023 and it rained frequently. That means the mosquitos were out and about. You will need good sunblock and mosquito repellent to enjoy Cartagena especially in the summer months.
Here are my top favorite repellent and sunscreen that keep me covered:
Face: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Non-Greasy Sunscreen Stick for Face & Body, Broad Spectrum SPF 70
For my arms, back, and legs: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion, Broad Spectrum SPF 55
Insect repellent. I recommend a combination of wipes and a spray. My favorites are:
OFF! FamilyCare Insect & Mosquito Repellent Spritz, Unscented Bug spray with Aloe-Vera, 7% Deet, 9 oz and Cutter All Family Mosquito Repellent Wipes, 15 Wipes.
Things to Do in Cartagena
Now, let’s dive into the top five things to do in Cartagena. First, I highly recommend taking a food tour to explore the vibrant culinary scene and indulge in delicious local dishes. Another must-do activity is a walking tour, which allows you to immerse yourself in the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Additionally, a full-day Rosario Islands cruise, including Baru, Cholon, and Playa Blanca, is an excellent way to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters. To book these tours, I highly recommend planning your excursion using Viator. a reliable platform that offers a wide range of tour and excursion options.
Visit Medellin
When visiting Colombia, I highly recommend taking the time to explore the captivating city of Medellin. To get there from Cartagena, the most convenient option is to take a domestic flight. Several airlines operate regular flights between the two cities, making it easily accessible.
In Medellin, consider staying in neighborhoods such as El Poblado or Laureles, which are popular among visitors due to their vibrant atmosphere, excellent dining options, safety and proximity to major attractions. To make the most of your time in Medellin, consider booking tours such as a private Guatape tour, where you can explore the stunning landscapes and climb the iconic El Peñol rock. Additionally, a city walking tour allows you to discover the city’s transformation and learn about its rich history. Viator is a great platform for booking these tours.
If I were to choose between spending more time in Medellin or Cartagena on a return visit to Colombia, I would personally opt for more time in Medellin. The climate there suits my preferences better, and the city offers a unique blend of modernity and natural beauty.
I found that I did not need mosquito repellent as often except the early evening in Medellin but I definitely recommend having some with you along with sunblock.
Where and What to Eat in Cartagena and Medellin
If you’re planning a trip to Colombia and are looking forward to indulging in some delicious culinary experiences, Cartagena and Medellin should be on your list of must-visit cities. In Cartagena, the vibrant coastal gem, you’ll find a myriad of fantastic dining options. For a taste of authentic Colombian cuisine, head to La Mulata. This local favorite serves up traditional dishes like arepas and sancocho with a side of warm hospitality. For seafood lovers, Restaurante Don Juan is a top choice, offering a wide selection of fresh seafood delicacies in a charming colonial setting. And if you’re craving a fusion of flavors, Carmen Cartagena is a trendy spot known for its innovative and artfully presented dishes. In Medellin, a city renowned for its culinary scene, two standout establishments are Andaluf and Sweet Georgia Cafe. Andaluf is a small family owned restaurant that offers amazing Afro Caribbean cuisine. Meanwhile, Sweet Georgia Cafe satisfies your cravings for soul food with mouthwatering dishes like fried chicken and collard greens. These three choices are just a taste of the incredible dining experiences awaiting you in Cartagena and Medellin, where gastronomic delights are around every corner.

When exploring the enchanting cities of Cartagena and Medellin in Colombia, finding the best way to get around is essential to make the most of your visit. In Cartagena, walking is a fantastic option as it allows you to soak in the colorful streets and charming architecture of the Walled City and Getsemani. For longer distances or to beat the heat, taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber are convenient and readily available. In Medellin, the city’s efficient metro system is a top choice for getting around. It’s clean, safe, and connects various neighborhoods and attractions. To reach more remote areas or embark on day trips, consider using Uber or hiring a private driver or joining organized tours, which offer hassle-free transportation and insightful local guides.
