Are you planning a trip to Italy and finding yourself torn between the iconic allure of Rome and the artistic charm of Florence?

While Rome may be the eternal city and a must-see for many travelers, there’s a compelling case to be made for starting your Italian adventure in Florence. Renowned for its Renaissance art, picturesque streets, and rich cultural heritage, Florence offers a unique and enchanting experience that sets it apart from its larger counterpart.

As you know it is also my favorite city in the world!  But that’s not the point (smile). The fact is that for so many reasons, Florence be your first stop in Italy.  In this blog post, I will share 6 reasons why Florence should be the first city you visit in Italy – NOT Rome.

1. Artistic Masterpieces Abound

Florence is a veritable treasure trove of artistic masterpieces, boasting some of the most renowned works in the world. From Michelangelo’s David in the Accademia Gallery to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus at the Uffizi Gallery, every corner of the city is steeped in artistic legacy. Wander through the halls of the Pitti Palace, marvel at the intricate facade of the Duomo, and soak in the beauty of the city’s countless churches adorned with frescoes by the likes of Giotto and Masaccio. For art enthusiasts, Florence is an unparalleled paradise.

2. Intimate and Walkable City Center

Unlike the sprawling metropolis of Rome, Florence’s compact city center is easily navigable on foot, making it perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace. Meander through narrow cobblestone streets lined with quaint boutiques, artisan workshops, and cozy cafes tucked away in hidden corners. With its intimate atmosphere and charming ambiance, Florence invites you to immerse yourself in its beauty and discover its many hidden gems around every corner.

3. Culinary Delights Galore

Italian cuisine is celebrated the world over, and Florence is no exception when it comes to culinary delights. Indulge in mouthwatering Tuscan specialties such as ribollita (a hearty vegetable soup), bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), and the iconic gelato that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving for more. From traditional trattorias to gourmet restaurants, Florence offers a diverse culinary scene that caters to every palate and budget.

4. Rich History and Cultural Heritage

As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is steeped in history and cultural significance. Walk in the footsteps of Medici rulers, admire the architectural marvels of Brunelleschi and Ghiberti, and learn about the city’s fascinating past through its museums, palaces, and landmarks. Whether you’re exploring the imposing Palazzo Vecchio or strolling across the Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s rich tapestry of history and culture is sure to captivate your imagination.

5. Gateway to Tuscany’s Splendor

Beyond its enchanting borders, Florence serves as the perfect gateway to the scenic wonders of the Tuscan countryside. Embark on day trips to nearby towns such as Siena, Pisa, and Lucca, where rolling hills, vineyards, and medieval architecture await. Explore the idyllic landscapes immortalized in countless works of art and savor the tranquility of rural life amidst the beauty of Tuscany.

While Rome undoubtedly holds its allure, Florence offers a more intimate and immersive experience that captures the essence of Italy’s cultural heritage. From its artistic treasures to its culinary delights and rich history, Florence is a city that will leave an indelible mark on your heart and soul.

6. Less Racism

Unfortunately, as a Black person traveling how I am treated is something I have to think about.  Frankly, I have experienced overt racism in Rome, and many travelers of color share stories all over social media about negative experiences in Rome and other parts of Northern Italy. To date, I can honestly say that I have never felt unwelcome in Florence and so for me, that is a very important reason to start your exploration of Italy in Florence.

So, why wait? Start your Italian adventure in Florence and discover the magic of this enchanting city for yourself.
