In this blog post, I will share 3 easy steps one can take to build the courage and mindset to take that first solo trip!

One of the questions I get asked a lot about solo travel is “How do you travel to all those places alone? Don’t you feel lonely aren’t you afraid?”

The honest answer is No. I don’t feel afraid of solo traveling because I prepare and plan my trip meticulously so that I feel comfortable. I have shared several blog posts about how I prepare for solo travel from a personal security perspective. In this post, I will share things I did to develop the comfort level to keep my own company on international trips abroad for extended periods.

3 easy steps you can take to build the courage and mindset to take your first solo trip!

  1. Take Yourself to Dinner Alone. This is something I do often. I find a great restaurant everyone is raving about, book a reservation, and go solo dolo! I love saying “La Mesa para uno personas por favor.” “Or a table for one person please.”

  2. Go To The Movies Solo. This is another favorite of mine. I hate talking in the movies so going alone allows me to focus on what is happening on screen without having to focus on anyone else. While my favorite thing will always be going to the movies with my son, a close second is going to the movies on my lonesome. It has helped me be comfortable with being by myself for an extended period. Buy a ticket to an evening (not a matinee) and see a movie all on your own. I promise you will enjoy it.

  3. Do a local weekend getaway. Take two days and check out a bed and breakfast you’ve been curious about. Or book a hotel downtown in your city and treat yourself to a spa day. But do it alone. Doing this will give you the experience of staying in a hotel room alone for a short period in a town or city where you are comfortable. After this, think about spending a weekend in another major city nearby and see how it feels.

Solo travel is a great way to meet new people and see the world. But it can be risky, too. Here are some mistakes you should avoid if you want to stay safe

These 3 practical steps will help you build the confidence needed to do fun things solo! The key is to practice doing things you might ordinarily do with one or more people, solo! Practice doing things completely alone and envision a solo trip domestically and then internationally. Try them and see how you feel after each one! Then start planning your first solo trip!

A great way to plan safe and fun travel excursions is through  Viator. Check them out for great deals on walking tours, tours of popular places, and airport transfers.  As a woman traveling alone, I make a special point to plan my excursions in advance and I especially love Viator because I have the option of not paying in full until 48 hours before my tour date and I can get a refund until 24 hours before my tour!

How do I get the best prices on flights to all my adventures? I rely on Going (formerly Scotts Cheap Flights). I am always confident that the prices I find on Going are the lowest I will find anywhere.
